Chemical Reactions

For one of our last labs we studied chemical reactions. We put steel wool over an open flame and it turned blue do to a chemical reaction. Next we put a nail in some copper chloride and it turned a reddish brown color.

Trends in the periodic table

The difference between a group and a period is simple. A period goes horizontal and a group goes vertically. You can remember this by thinking that a sentence ends in a period and a sentence goes left to right. The periodic table is arranged by energy level.

flame lab

Essential Question: Colors indicate any metals energy level

1. Some other chemicals might be stuck on the bunsen burner.
3. Identification of an element with only one property is invalid because other substances could burn off the same colors.
4. The colors in the flame test are produced because of the substances energy level and the amount of oxygen.
5. The substances in increasing energy level are carbon, BaCNo3, KNO3, Sr(NO3), LINO3
6. The heat releases the energy

                                                                     Oreo Cookie Lab

              Author: Jak Klosowski, Pentucket HS.
              Date: 9/20/13

Students measured the filling in three types of Oreo cookies to determine if filling amounts matched advertising.
Hypothesis: I thought that the filling would be a little less than what was advertised.

Method:  1. Weigh the mass of the boat
2. Weigh the mass of the boat with the filling in it
3. subtract the boat with the filling minus the boat without the filling
4. repeat steps 1-3 with double stuffed and mega stuffed.
5. Compare data and advertising.

original stuffed filling- 3.35 grams          1.000
double stuffed filling-6.3 grams              1.880
mega stuffed filling- 9.04 grams             2.698

Conclusion: The advertisement was close to being true but not quite 100% true.

why study science

I want to take this class to learn about physics my friends said thats a fun class. What im looking forward to the most is the energy and motion part. Wwe study science to learn about nature.
